University of California, Berkeley

Join us Tuesdays at 8pm in the Calvin Room at First Pres Berkeley

Welcome to RUF at Berkeley! We are a student organization that strives to take the Gospel seriously (the good news of Jesus Christ), without taking ourselves too seriously. We believe it is the Gospel that gives our lives meaning, and it is the Gospel that brings about change, healing, and renewal in our world.

There's a place for everyone at RUF! Whether you are a cynic, a skeptic, a new believer, a life-long Christian, or just someone who is weary with all of life's challenges and looking for hope and encouragement, we would love to meet you and get to know you!

John Kong

John Kong

Campus Minister

John is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (2008) and Westminster Seminary California (2019). He was born in Nashville, TN, but grew up in Taiwan from the age of 3 until he graduated high school. After college, he worked in an investment bank for 7 years before sensing God calling him to ministry, and he served as the Pastor of Christian Education at New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido, CA, before coming to RUF Berkeley.

John loves hanging out with college students, whether it is grabbing a bite to eat, snowboarding in the mountains, playing sports, or just chatting about life. What he loves most, however, is walking alongside the students as they discern and mature in their relationship with God. John is married to Amanda (who happens to be a UC Berkeley alum), and they live in San Francisco, just across the Bay Bridge from Berkeley.

Cameron Hughes

Cameron Hughes

Campus Staff

Cameron is from Birmingham, Alabama and is a graduate of Carson-Newman University where she studied music. Upon moving to Berkeley for the internship in 2021, Cameron quickly fell in love with California and the Bay Area and came on staff in the summer of 2023. She has recently gotten into making ice cream and pickles, though not at the same time.

Abby Agan

Abby Agan

Intern

Abby graduated from the University of Georgia in 2023 with a degree in political science and minored in law, geography, and French. Though she lived in Georgia for eight years during high school and college, she grew up in St. Louis, MO and thinks of it as home. RUF was a source of deep community, wisdom, and gospel hope throughout her time at UGA, and she was especially impacted by her campus staff who consistently offered her Christ-like compassion and curiosity--she can't wait to learn the hearts and stories of students at Cal Berkeley in the same way! In no particular order, Abby loves all things Star Wars, keeping up with Cardinals baseball, and being able to spend unhurried time with her friends. She's so excited to make Berkeley her new home and spend two years learning more about God and the world he created!

Sam Stackler

Sam Stackler

Intern

Sam is from Elkton, Maryland, originally and went to high school in Clinton, Mississippi. He Graduated in May 2023 with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. RUF, during his time at USM, was a constant reminder of God's faithfulness and the peace Christ offers us to live in. In particular, he learned what Christlike compassion was through his Campus Minister. He cannot wait to serve at UC Berkeley! Specifically he is excited get to know the students there and grow in his walk with God. Some of Sam's hobbies include playing trombone and guitar, reading, playing video games, watching esports and going on walks!
