Welcome to RUF at Rice University! We are a student organization that seeks to share the light and life of Jesus with the larger campus community. This is a place for any student, regardless of background, belief, or lifestyle to come and consider the claims of the Bible within a diverse community of people.

Owen Merrell

Owen Merrell

Intern

Owen was born in Houston and grew up near Liberty, TX with his 11 brothers and sisters. After two years at Lonestar College, Owen transferred to Mississippi College outside of Jackson, MS to get a bachelor’s in Christian Studies and Philosophy. It was there that he was able to experience a renewed sense of God grace through the local RUF. Owen plans on going to seminary one day and enjoys basketball, folk music, and making Chai tea in bulk. He loves being able to talk to people one on one, finding shared experience, and listening to peoples’ stories. He is so glad to be a part of the gospel work that is being done at Rice, as well as exploring with students our deep and desperate need for Christ.

Olivia Thurman

Olivia Thurman

Intern

Olivia grew up in Houston, Texas with her parents and two younger brothers. Previous to the internship, she studied English with a focus in literature at Texas A&M University. RUF was a part of her life throughout her time at A&M, and she is delighted to further be a part of the community. In her free time, Olivia enjoys writing, singing, listening to music, reading, and traveling to and exploring new places whenever she can. She values pursuing relationships with the people in her life, allowing her to learn more about both them and herself and enabling her to better understand the purpose and blessing of fellowship.
