Week 3: May 17-22

Speaker:

Reverend Elbert McGowan, Senior Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Jackson MS

“Pastor El” was born and raised in Jackson, MS. He moved to Huntsville, Alabama where he enrolled at Alabama A&M University. After graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree, Elbert accepted a job with General Electric Aircraft in Cincinnati, Ohio. While in Jackson, Elbert had watched drugs ravage his family. While living in Cincinnati the LORD began to bring healing, hope, and help to his family through the gospel witness of Trinity Church PCA. Seeing his family’s conversion made him long for Jesus to save and change him as well. And that’s exactly what happened! Elbert was converted on the couch in his apartment in Ohio while reading a Bible he had been given. He found a local church where godly men cared for and taught him what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Elbert took a new job with GE in Kentucky. However, he also felt called to preach the Gospel. He was licensed to preach at Eastview Missionary Baptist Church. He served bi-vocationally as a minister of evangelism and outreach. His passion to share the gospel grew and resulted in a full-fledged prison ministry. He married Karen in 2004. They prepared for a life together in Kentucky, but God had other plans. His parents and others began to tell them about an intentionally multi-ethnic church being planted in the old building of Trinity Church, PCA. Elbert and Karen relocated two months after getting married, to Jackson in order to study at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) and serve as an intern at this new church plant – Redeemer Church, PCA. In 2007, Elbert founded a Reformed University Fellowship campus ministry on the campus of Jackson State University. It was the first RUF at a Historically Black College or University. After serving students at JSU for nine years, he accepted a call to be the Senior Pastor of Redeemer Church. Elbert and Karen have two children, Karis and Tripp. They live in Jackson and remain deeply in love with this city, its people, and what God is doing there. They are excited to be a part of what God is doing to make broken things new!

Location: Laguna Beach Christian Retreat, Panama City Beach, Florida
