During this critical time in their lives, college students are deciding what they believe and why.

For us, these statistics are more than just numbers; they represent real student lives on campuses across the country. Each one is an opportunity for transformation through the Gospel.

Lord willing, they will be part of the Church for the rest of their lives and for all of eternity.

RUF is positioned to meet this extraordinary opportunity.

As our ministry staff push back the darkness on campus with the Good News, we see lives bearing fruit now. We also serve with the long view in mind: to build the future of the Church– the community God designed for us, and a gift He uses for our good and His glory.

This vision– to strengthen the Church– is the motivation for our Bright Hope for Tomorrow campaign.

Reaching thousands more students with a message of hope will happen through planting new ministries, recruiting future RUF staff, and strengthening our current ministries.

RUF engages students with the Gospel of Jesus while connecting them with Christian community. The encouragement and mentorship students receive from staff is deeply rooted in Biblical truths that guide them toward our Savior. RUF is a place where students are known and loved in community while exploring who Jesus is and what He calls them to. Our goal is to launch 50 new RUF ministries while strengthening our existing campuses so that more students are reached with the Gospel.

Our ‘No Lunch Alone’ challenge was partly inspired by a class research study that revealed a lot about the way students interact with food, technology, and community. Many students reported using technology to distract themselves from the loneliness of eating alone, and themes of anxiety, depression, social disconnect, and insecurity all influenced satiety and satisfaction during and after meals.

As people who have been radically and relationally transformed by the necessary community of the Gospel, our team desired to become the most hospitable place on campus by encouraging students to boldly move past the awkwardness of sharing a meal with someone you don’t know very well.

The challenge lasted two weeks during winter quarter, which can be a dark and dreary time on our campus. Each day we would update the leaderboard, adding one point per meal a student shared with new friends. We did have a winner at the end, but we wanted to emphasize that the real prize of this challenge was learning how to build community in the mundane routines of life, so everyone who participated got a fun sticker!

I was continually impressed by the boldness of new and seasoned RUF-ers who invited strangers to lunch and made meeting someone new a regular goal over those two weeks.

Praise God that we have such a profound example of the ministry of food and fellowship through Christ Jesus; our Brother consistently shared meals with people who didn’t know him. What a gift it is to know that we are welcome at his table.

RUF serves as a bridge that connects young people to the Church. By walking with college students, we help them grow in love and commitment to the body of Christ. We don’t replace the Church; we encourage students to join the local Church for a lifetime of loving Jesus.

“RUF has profoundly shaped my understanding of Christian community, teaching me what it means to be a part of the body of Christ and experience God’s love and goodness through the members of his church. I love that one of RUF’s top priorities is getting students connected to a church community—through participating in this small group on campus, I understand the immeasurable value of being connected to a church and participating in the body of Christ.” —MeiMei Graber, RUF Student
