This Q&A is part of a series of interviews featuring RUF Alumni. Today’s post features Tom Cannon, a University of South Carolina graduate currently working as the National Coordinator of RUF.
1. Let’s start off with who are you and what do you do?
I’m the National Coordinator for RUF.
2. What college did you graduate from?
I graduted from the University of South Carolina in 1982.
3. Who was your campus minister when you attended RUF?

4. What is your favorite memory from RUF?
That’s tough! So many of them. One would have to be my first contact with RUF. I was a very young Christian at USC and very discouraged as my involvement with Christian groups on campus was leaving me exhausted and tempted to give up on Jesus. I met Lee Ferguson in the Student Union and the first thing that struck me was how he didn’t see me as way to advance his own ministry (something I had felt with other groups.) He had a clear and basic concern for my relationship with Jesus. That made a big difference. From there he taught me how to pray and read the Bible, to think like a Christian and see God in his fullness, not just be busy for him.
5. How has RUF impacted how you approach your career?
Significantly, as it became my career! My call to ministry began as one of the early RUF Interns from 1982 to 1984. I was ordained in 1988 and most of my vocational ministry has been either in campus ministry with RUF or with churches reaching university communities. RUF has been a defining part of my life.
6. What would you say to an incoming freshman?
Choose your friends wisely. Don’t confuse being “connected” with community. Relax. Take your time. And keep in mind the wisdom of King Solomon, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).
